CELL THERAPY

Are you a candidate for Regenerative Medicine therapy?

What are Stem Cells?

Stem cells that are used for cell therapy are specialized cells that can naturally develop into many different cell types throughout our body. The discs in between our vertebrae are constantly undergoing repair, most of which are primarily organized by stem cells.

Sadly, our discs do not have enough stem cells to combat the degenerative disc disease process when discs start to break down over time. The pain and inflammation from this process is the most common cause of back pain. Although there are many different types of stem cells, the type that has been found to be best for treating orthopedic (neck and spine) injuries is mesenchymal stem cells (MSC).

Regenerative medicine procedures, like those offered by Dr. Rudin, aim to introduce a patient’s own cells back into their discs in an effort to slow or improve this degenerative process.

Disclaimer: Bone marrow cell therapy is a promising approach for a number of orthopedic conditions, but it’s not for everyone. Patients with a history of lymphoma or leukemia, certain blood diseases, and multiple medical issues are often not candidates. During your initial consultation, our medical team will review your medical history and injuries with you to help you determine if you’re an ideal candidate.

Dr. Jay Downing was interviewed by Peter MacArthur from WDEL about the latest treatments performed by the team at First State Spine.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Stem cells can be found in tissue throughout your body; but bone marrow produces one of the strongest sources of stem cells in the form of MSC’s. Bone marrow can be collected from several bones within your body and is reasonably easy to access. Your bone marrow will be aspirated through a small needle puncture in your pelvic bone to collect the BMA. Bone Marrow Aspirate (BMA) is an element of your bone marrow that contains growth factors and anti-inflammatory proteins that have been shown to promote natural healing and reduce pain. The BMA will be collected into a sterile syringe and injected into the targeted area through fluoroscopic guidance.

THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF CELL (BMA) THERAPY

  • Decreased inflammation resulting in pain-relief
  • Improved functionality and range of motion
  • Natural and effective alternative to major surgery
  • Outpatient procedure with shorter recovery time
  • A quicker healing process with no medication

SPINAL CONDITIONS THAT MAY BENEFIT FROM CELL (BMA) INJECTIONS

  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Herniated Discs
  • Spinal Facet Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Pain

Obtaining the best results

FIND A PHYSICIAN THAT IS TRAINED IN SPINAL INJECTIONS & BMA CELL PROCEDURES

It’s imperative that your physician performing the procedure is well trained and qualified in spine care and cell therapy.

MAKE SURE YOU ARE RECEIVING YOUR OWN BONE MARROW CELLS

Currently, bone marrow cell treatments are allowed by the FDA as there are many studies presenting their effectiveness and safety. Trained and ethical physicians use only these cells. Studies have also shown that in addition to discs, facet joints and sacroiliac joints also cause back pain and in some cases may benefit from cell injections.

FLUOROSCOPIC GUIDANCE SHOULD BE USED TO PERFORM THE PROCEDURE

It is impossible to inject structures in the back like discs without the use of Fluoroscopy. Make sure Fluoroscopic or Ultrasonic guidance is used.
